This paper discusses the detection of Brown Dwarf's, their place in the star/planet hierarchy and how this could affect the known criteria in searching for other life supporting worlds. In the case of single items it is now possible to detect and image objects as small as 5 Jupiter masses, though the existence of Brown Dwarf's has still to be conclusively confirmed. Perhaps the most important aspect of this work is that relatively low-cost ground-based equipment is all that is needed, though space-based telescopes will undoubtedly extend the scope and range of the work under way, the bulk of future progams will involve the use of ground installations.
