Optical observations of the 1-arcmin core of the complex supernova remnant CTB 80 have been made with the Manchester echelle spectrometer, in both its imaging and spectral modes, on the Isaac Newton and William Herschel telescopes.
Four `shells' (A-D) are found in the light of Hα but only the central two of these (A and B) are bright at [N II]. Ionization by shocks of shells with different velocities is implied.
One interpretation of the spectral data is that shell A is expanding radially more towards the observer at 200 km s-1 and B away from the observer at 100 km s-1. Some hints of radial expansions of shells C and D are also found. These expansion velocities are consistent with the predicted shock velocity of 120 km s-1 found from the optical line ratios, but are much smaller than the 600-1100 km s-1 velocities predicted by proper motions which were derived assuming CTB 80 is asymptotically equal to 2.5 kpc distant. One possibility is that the remnant is at a distance of ≤ 1 kpc.
