Australia has been actively involved in scientific ballooning in the fields of infrared, X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics during the last two decades. Balloon operations have been carried out both at the national and the international collaborative levels. Some scientific and technical aspects of balloon flights from the principal launch site of Alice Springs in central Australia are presented. Ways of maximizing the potential of future balloon activity from Australia in the context of an international framework are discussed.
