1E1740.7-2942 was observed with the combination of the High-Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) and the Advanced CCD Imaging System (ACIS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, as a part of the ACIS GTO program. The zeroth-order image reveals strong extended X-ray emission around the source, reminiscent of a scattering halo produced by interstellar dust along the line of sight. Scattering halos have been inferred previously for bright Galactic X-ray sources, but Chandra has now made it possible to directly image the phenomenon. We will discuss the implications of the result on the unusual environment that the source is thought to be in. The X-ray spectrum of the source is roughly the same as those obtained from previous ASCA observations, although several line-like features are marginally detected here. The spectral results will be examined in the context of possible calibration uncertainties. This work was supported by NASA through Contracts NAS 8-37716 and NAS 8-38252.
