The hydrogen isotope compositions in the Orgueil CI1, Kaidun-I C2, Kaidun-II C1, and Boriskino CM2 carbonaceous chondrites, the E39 xenolite from the Efremovka CV3 meteorite, and the acid-soluble residue of the Efremovka CV3 chondrite were studied. The deuterium content of a sample (relative to the D/H value of the world ocean) was expressed in terms of delta D quantity. The mean values for delta D for these chondrites was found to vary between -240 and +944 per mil, indicating a heterogeneous origin for chondrites. A petrological classification scheme is suggested for the carbonaceous chondrites, based on a correlation between delta D values and concentrations of H2O(+) at 200 C.
