The use of the Yukutake and James-Nevanlinna methods for the separation
of the secular geomagnetic variation field into drifting and nondrifting
components is considered. IGRF data are used to assess the validity of
the approach used. It is also found that the structure of the multipole
changes; it grows and drifts about a certain axis.
