The development of pressure anisotropy in the nighttime sector of the near magnetosphere is investigated in the adiabatic approximation. It is shown that a necessary condition for the development of an extended magnetic-field structure with a thin current sheet, characteristic of the end of the preliminary substorm phase, is the gradual decrease of the Bz component in the near-equatorial region. Attention is given to sources of the development of plasma anisotropy with p-parallel greater than o-perpendicular connected with azimuthal asymmetry of the magnetosphere.
