The present morphological investigation of the coma-region evolution of CN jets and CN shells in the coma of Comet HAlley in 1986 derives substantial evidence for a connection between the two structures on the basis of a structural analysis of digitized and intensity-calibrated photographs of the coma. The simultaneous existence of CN jets and shells in each image is indicative of a transition between the two structures that implies a secondary-source origin for the CN radicals in the jets and shells; the source in question may be organic, 'CHON' particles.
