A new insight on star variability can be obtained with methods of phase space reconstruction and dimension calculations. The topology of the attractor of a dynamical system known through a single observable can be reconstructed using the embedding theorem of Takens (1980). This reconstruction allows one to picture the attractor and/or to obtain topological information as, for instance, its dimension. The applicability of those methods on data submitted to the astronomical constraints is studied. The noise sensitivity calls for very accurate photometry (several 10 to the -4th). However, the method is almost insensitive to gaps (contrary to Fourier analysis) in the data as long as uninterrupted sequences contain several tens of characteristic times.
