The authors report the detection in the molecular envelope of IRC +10216 of four doublets of the 2Π3/2 ladder of C5H, a new radical recently discovered by Cernicharo et al. (1986). From the line intensities they derive rotational temperatures of 14 and 24K for the 2Π1/2 and 2Π3/2 ladders respectively. The C5H column density, averaged over a 25arcsec beam, is found to be about few ×1013cm-2. The abundance ratio HC5N/C5H is found to be ≈40 within a factor 2.
