New CCD photometry in the Johnson B and V passbands was obtained of the stellar content of NGC 1866 and of a nearby field. Measurements are presented for 1517 stars in the cluster and 640 stars in the field. The photometric errors of the data derived from the DAOPHOT processed CCD images are estimated using either the SNR (for the case when the crowding is not the major source of error) or artificial stars of well-known magnitude (if the field is very crowded).
