The analysis of a compilation of He II 4686 A and N III-C III 4640-50 A complex equivalent widths observed in the optical spectra of counterparts to low-mass X-ray binaries is presented. Based on a comparison between sources in the Galaxy and in the Large Magellanic Cloud and on theoretical considerations, it is suggested that the 4640-50 A/4686 A equivalent width ratio is likely to be a metallicity indicator of the accreting matter. The different observable X-ray characteristics of these sources which may also depend upon metallicity and therefore be correlated with the N III-C III emission strength are reviewed.
