Gamma-Ray Sources, Gamma-Ray Bursts

Scientific paper

Observational claims of emission of Ultra High Energy (UHE) radiation from astrophysical point sources are critically reviewed. No steady emission from any source has been reported since 1988 in the energy range from few tens of TeV to PeV, although, Fly's Eye and Akeno groups have reported observation of emission from Cygnus X-3 in the energy range above 1017 eV in the period from 1980 to present. Only steady candle observed is the Crab nebula in the energy range from 400 GeV to 7 TeV (VHE) by the Whipple and the Themistocle groups. There are reports of observation of episodic bursts from Her X-1, Crab nebula and pulsar, and Cygnus X-3. These observations are reviewed and their significance estimated. Future directions for UHE astronomy are discussed.
