The injection of gold royalties into the Treasury of the Colony of Victoria, and Herschel's observations of nebulae and double stars in southern skies were the catalysts for the Great Melbourne Telescope. The conception, gestation, birth, life, and death are discussed. Was its failure due to design and materials of construction or colonial incompetence? The inability to take photographs of greater than two minutes exposure restricted its usefulness.
