An account is given of the achievements of John Breakwell in the field of celestial mechanics, which encompassed the identification of the earth-moon translunar L2 libration point as a basis for the stationing of a communication satellite that could service the far side of the moon. This led to the concept of 'halo orbits', which was vindicated by the insertion of ISEE-3 into orbit around the sun-earth libration point L1.
