An H alpha image of nova FH Ser shows an almost circular shell with a noticeable equatorial belt. The nebular expansion parallax yields a distance of 850 pc. Rediscussion of the reddening leads to values between E(B-V) = 0.685 and 0.4, and to a bolometric luminosity of -7.5 and -6.9, respectively. During outburst the nova either radiated at constant luminosity above the Eddington limit, or it declined by a factor 2 in luminosity near the Eddington limit. Comparison with DQ Her and with other novae, observed in the UV, optical, and IR regions, renders the second alternative more likely.
