An overview of recent XMM-Newton observational science will be presented, with an emphasis on the availability of public data and support software for XMM-Newton. As the data from the XMM-Newton calibration and performance verification phase are gradually being made public, this presentation will focus on the structure of the data and the associated data products as well as on the how these data can be properly re-processed to obtain reliable, accurate results. This will be illustrated with results from some recent observations.
