We have obtained high resolution HST STIS observations of interstellar O 1 λ 1356 and Kr 1 λ 1236 absorption in 11 sightlines which are characterized by high extinction, large H 1 column densities and/or long pathlengths. Previous GHRS measurements of these weak features in seven relatively nearby diffuse clouds have shown no evidence for density-dependent depletion of either O or Kr, and have yielded a weighted mean gas-phase abundance ratio of log[N(O)/N(Kr)]=5.56+/-0.04 . The scatter in these data is low with a standard deviation of +/-0.02, smaller than the uncertainty in the mean. In comparison, our STIS measurements exhibit a larger scatter in the gas-phase O/Kr ratio and a lower mean: the sample's standard deviation is +/-0.08 with a weighted mean of 5.47+/-0.02 . The 2σ difference between these two means is primarily due to the STIS sightlines toward HD147888 (O/Kr ratio of 5.43+/-0.06), HD207198 (5.38+/-0.05) and HD152590 (5.27+/-0.10). Since Kr, as a noble gas, should not be depleted much into grains, these three cases may signify enhanced O dust depletion. Possessing E(B-V) values of 0.52 and 0.59, respectively, HD147888 and HD207198 are among the most heavily reddened stars in the STIS sample. With a pathlength of ≈3kpc, the HD152590 sightline is one of the longest and passes through the Carina Arm. We will discuss these three cases in detail and address the broader implications of the entire STIS sample.
