Ground-based radio observations of the August 1972 events are reviewed using data obtained at many observatories in different parts of the world. A general description of the August events is presented, and radio observations of the slowly varying component (SVC) as well as the four major flare events are analyzed in detail. The analysis emphasizes the daily variation of the 3-cm microwave SVC, solar brightness and polarization variations at 3 and 8 cm, and the numerous flare-associated radio bursts. Existing criteria for predicting proton flares are given, two additional criteria are proposed, and the causal relation between the optical flares and the recorded interplanetary disturbances is investigated.
