The flares of August 1972 are reviewed on the basis of optical observations, with emphasis on flare dynamics. It is shown that these flares occurred as a result of the evolution of an active region which appeared with inverted magnetic polarity on July 11, underwent complex topological changes due to large proper motions of sunspots, and decayed within 1.5 months of its appearance. The apparent magnetic-energy buildup and release in the flares are analyzed, and quantitative agreement is obtained between observations and theoretical predictions. Although no apparent triggering mechanisms are identified, the possibility is indicated of theoretically predicting flare-excitation locations on the basis of magnetograms. These results are shown to confirm the argument that a flare occurs during active-region evolution as a consequence of passive responses of local magnetic fields to large-scale photospheric motions. The possibility of magnetic-energy storage in the layer between EUV and X-ray structures and H-alpha structures is considered along with the possibility of particle acceleration in the lower solar atmosphere.
