The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (Netherlands) produces an enormous amount of numerical information on the dynamics of the interstellar clouds of neutral hydrogen gas in distant galaxies, using the Doppler shift data. Since it is not feasible to form an overview of the observational results for a galaxy by examining contour plots or tables of numbers, an attempt is made to obtain a photographic display of the data. The applied method is based on the procedure recently developed by Heiles and Jenkins for using color to represent Doppler velocities. Color photographs showing the distribution and motions of the neutral H clouds in the M 81 and M 101 galaxies are presented and the technique used in their preparation is discussed. The analysis of the pictures revealed a large-scale deviation from symmetric circular rotation in the outer parts of both galaxies.
