Data accumulated from four years of studies of lunar rock specimens are reviewed for inferences on lunar volcanic activity of the past, and on lunar thermal and chemical evolution with relevance to comparative planetology. The distribution of lunar maria is described, and the principal types of basalts found in maria and their major phases are mentioned. Comparisons between terrestrial basalts and lunar maria basalts are drawn with reference to: differences in rare earths contents, viscosity at time of lava flow, and metal traces. The Mg-rich Fe-rich basalts are older than the maria, and contrast with the anorthositic (Ca-rich, Al-rich) continental basalts. The absence of any record of continental volcanism is noted, and inferences on the moon's deep structure drawn from Apollo seismic data are presented.
