Occultation duration observations are analyzed for the shape of the Martian atmosphere at the height at which the intensity of the starlight diminished by half. The oblateness is found to be about twice as great as that of the surface of Mars. The occultation considered occurred on April 8, 1976, when Mars occulted the bright star epsilon Geminorum (magnitude 3.2). Of particular interest are the high accuracy photoelectric observations made from Greenbelt (Maryland), Atlanta (Georgia), Fort Davis (Texas), and from an aircraft over the western North Atlantic.
