On Venera 9 the ion plasma component was measured in 16 energy ranges from 0 to 4400 eV with the aid of a sun-oriented modulation trap. The electron component was measured by an integrated trap oriented in the anti-solar direction, with 16 values of stopping potential in the range 0-300 V appearing on the analyzing network. Simultaneous measurements of the ion and electron components in the corpuscular and optical shadow, the corpuscular penumbra, the transition region and the circumplanetary shock wave, and during passage from the transition region into the solar wind, are presented. The position of the shock wave front as revealed by the data is close to the planet and supports the nonmagnetic nature of the obstacle at Venus.
