Results obtained by Foster et al. (1971) are compared with data reported by Caan et al. (1975) and substorm models consistent with the two studies are considered. It is pointed out that three of the five models described by Hirshberg and Holzer (1975) for the typical substorm are already eliminated by the results of Caan et al. The reported investigation shows that the analysis of a selection of statistical studies can severely restrict the description of the typical substorm compatible with the data.
