We present a detailed description of the structure and performance of the ISO astronomical observing template PHT51 which was used to measure the polarisation of astronomical targets in the far-infrared at 170 μm. We describe the data processing steps up to the mean signal per measurement. Special attention is given to the assessment of the instrumental stability and consistency. We have evaluated all background observations obtained with PHT51 in order to derive the instrumental polarisation. The results are compared with the previous assessment.
