Basic data on the structure of the moon obtained from space- and earth-based investigations are summarized. Two extreme variants of the origin of the moon from a circumterrestrial disk are compared: (1) that the disk formed as a consequence of the megaimpact of a large protoplanetary body onto the mantle of the growing earth, and (2) that the disk was continuously replenished by matter from the preplanetary cloud. Both models of the origin of the moon need careful quantitative development with account of the early thermal history of the earth, particularly for the case of megaimpact.
