The idea that evolution advances by "astronomical punctuation" due to large impacts has been very popular in recent years. The latest finding, the dinosaur extinction is most likely to be associated with the more continuous débris of a giant comet alters our perception of "punctuated equilibrium". Thus our present environment probably also includes a giant comet in an advanced stage of disintegration and may therefore be much more hazardous than previously realised, not least through impacts, ozone depletion and sudden changes in global temperature.
