The Thomas-Fermi-Dirac (TFD) statistical model for electronic structure refined by Weizsaecker gradient and correlation energy corrections, and the resulting TFD-Lambda Wc model is used to calculate the nonrelativistic cold matter equation of state (EOS) in the Wigner-Seitz spherical cell approximation. The TFD-Lambda Wc model with a muffin-tin correction is presented and used to estimate the effect of lattice structure on the EOS. The physical defects of the TFD-Lambda Wc model are critically evaluated, and the nearly free-electron empirical model is used to calculate and compare the EOS for some simple metals up to a moderate pressure. Laboratory data are used to establish the domain of validity of the statistical EOS. Finally, the present EOS is used to construct models of cold, low-mass white dwarfs or planets. The maximum radius of a cold, self-gravitating equilibrium carbon star is established.
