In this talk, we review the radio sounding technique that unexpectedly provides remote measurements of the plasma density along the magnetic field line from one hemisphere to the other. A large database of such measurements is now available concentrated in the region from 0.5 Re to 4 Re from the earth. Empirical models have been developed to describe the plasma distribution in this region under different geomagnetic activities. The depletion and refilling processes of the plasmasphere associated with magnetostorms has been studied.
