The Polar spacecraft observed the signatures of magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause on April 1, 2001. As Polar traversed an X-line geometry, from the magnetosheath to the magnetosphere, intense electric and magnetic field fluctuations were observed above the ion gyrofrequency fci within the nominal X-line system. In the ion diffusion region, the ion motion becomes decoupled from the electrons giving rise to a Hall current system and the onset of the turbulence is observed to coincide spatially with this current system. The turbulence is polarized perpendicular to the background magnetic field. As the spacecraft enters the electron diffusion region the instability is quenched, possibly because plasma β becomes very large. Since the waves are stabilized in the electron diffusion region, they are not likely to contribute to an anomalous resistivity there. We show data from several other magnetopause crossing with similar signatures.
