It is argued that irradiated tetrahedron silicates in the interstellar dust are one of the main contributors responsible for many of the diffuse absorption features of interstellar bands in the visible region. Attention is given to the stable absorption bands of irradiated tetrahedron silicates with particular emphasis on silicate glasses and amethyst. It is concluded that changes in the absorption properties of impure silicate grains due to temperature variations and irradiation play an important role in the interstellar medium. In particular, by varying the number of radiation-induced color centers it is possible to explain the stable bands of cold dust clouds, and the absence of these bands in warm circumstellar envelopes and in the possible shells of type I supernovae.
