The mechanical strength of the solid material at the surface of a cometary or planetary body is an important parameter per se as well as for the preparation of interplanetary 'lander missions'. With the comet rendezvous mission ROSETTA an anchoring harpoon is shot into the surface of comet P/Wirtanen immediately after touchdown of the spacecraft. An integrated accelerometer measures the deceleration profile, from which the material strength as a function of depth will be deduced. In preparation of this part of the MUPUS experiment (Multi-Purpose Sensors for Surface and Sub-Surface Science), we have performed several experimental investigations on laboratory samples, using methods of dynamic and static penetrometry. Among the materials investigated were porous foamglas and sintered porous water ice. Data obtained by quasi-static (slow penetration) and by dynamic (shots) methods are compared and interpreted in terms of a geometrical model which links the mechanical parameters (elastic modulus, cohesion and internal friction) to the microstructural properties of the target: shape, spatial arrangement and bonding of adjacent particles. Given a microscopical model as proposed it should be possible to reveal structural characteristics of near-surface cometary material and layering.
