Scientific paper

The paper reviews photometric, spectral, and polarization data obtained during optical, IR, and radio observations of variable cool stars whose photospheric temperatures do not exceed 2500 K. Results of several searches for such IR stars are summarized, and photometric characteristics of these objects are examined, including color indices, IR energy distributions, spectra in the range from 0.8 to 20 microns, spectral classification, and IR emission as well as absorption lines. The temperatures estimated for several IR stars are discussed, and possible sources of observed IR excesses are considered, particularly selective absorption by interstellar dust, massive cold satellites near visible stars, synchrotron emission associated with flares, anomalous chemical compositions in extended stellar atmospheres, and circumstellar dust shells. Radio observations of several OH maser sources are also reviewed.
