High angular resolution (12 arcsec) mapping observations of the CO(2-1) line in five planetary nebulae: M1-7, M4-9, M2-51, NGC 7293, and VV 47. Their CO envelopes show a variety of large scale structures (shells, rings, lobes) which are spatially and kinematically fairly symmetric about the central stars, and follow the main distribution of ionized gas. On smaller size scales, especially in the closest object NGC 7293 where the spatial resolution is highest, they also show that the molecular gas is fragmented into knots or filaments which are unresolved by the telescope beam. The mass of molecular gas in the envelopes ranges from about 0.1 to 0.001 solar mass, and the mass ratio of molecular to ionized gas ranges from about 5 to 0.005. The observations support the idea that the optical nebulae form from the ionization of molecular envelopes which are destroyed as the nebulae expand.
