In order to understand if the differences between the Southern Sky Redshift Survey of da Costa et al. (1988) (which is diameter-limited) and the CfA survey (which is magnitude-limited) are real or induced by selection effects, a diameter-limited sample of galaxies has been extracted from the Uppsala catalogue, covering the same sky region of the CfA survey. The main differences between the two samples, like their morphological composition, surface brightness and redshift distribution are discussed. In analogy to the luminosity function, the diameter function has been computed for this sample testing various methods and their dependence on the large-scale inhomogeneities. The knowledge of this function has made it possible to correct for the selection function of the sample and to compute an 'unbiased' mean galaxy density. This density, computed through two different estimators, is then compared with that obtained from a magnitude-limited sample.
