The Community Coordinated Modeling Center provides an opportunity to exploit the overlap between research and operational goals, both to motivate basic research and to accelerate the application of research progress into space weather operations. The operational goals of the CCMC are tightly coupled with the research goals. While the research emphasis is on improving our scientific understanding of the solar-terrestrial system and enabling the broad use of validated, state-of-the-art models, the operational emphasis is on using these models to produce accurate nowcasts and forecasts of space weather and its impacts. In this presentation, we will describe the model validation that is useful to select and transition models from research to operations and the validation that should accompany models as they are used operationally. This validation should include historical accuracy over long time periods using established metrics as well as include continuous measures of performance during real-time execution. Through its broad community access and active role in model validation, the CCMC can give valuable measures of model performance to help determine the suitability of models for research and operations. This validation, based on metrics that address both research and operational parameters, will enhance the value of the CCMC to scientific researchers and streamline the transition of research models to operations.
