Since the launch of the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) in August 1997, we have obtained composition data for abundant isotopes and elements from C to Ni in ~30 large solar energetic particle (SEP) events using the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS). Our earlier results have clearly established that SEP isotopic composition varies widely (by factors of >3) from event to event, apparently due to mass fractionation processes during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. Based on the 22Ne/20Ne ratio, it appeared as if fractionation effects were larger and more variable in 1997 and 1998 than they were in 1999 and beyond, although this may have been due to the limited size of the event sample. In this report, we update our isotopic composition survey to the present (including the large events of late 2001) and examine other isotopic ratios in an effort to assess the reality of any fractionation dependence on the solar cycle. In addition, recent improvements in the data analysis allow us to extend the isotopic composition measurements to ~50% lower energy than before, further increasing the number of SEP events available for study. This work was supported by NASA at Caltech (under grant NAG5-6912), JPL, and GSFC.
