The method of inferring the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) polarity from measurements of the cosmic-ray north-south anisotropy has been tested using a large set of data, extending from January 1971 through December 1997. The GG parameter, introduced by Nagashima et al. (1972), is considered. On the whole, 72% of the inferred daily polarities agree with the direct observations carried out by spacecrafts. The discrepancies depend in part on gaps existing in the direct observations and on fluctuations in the field directions: in fact, the success rate of the inferring method increases to 83% if one restricts the comparison to days when a coherent polarity was observed by the satellites for at least 18 hours. On the other hand, the inference method is subject to a bias: in fact, its predictions are less accurate when sectors of a given polarity, in the ecliptic plane, cover more than half of a solar rotation. Such situation occurs more frequently around the sunspot minimum. Nevertheless, we show that under certain conditions, occurring for 30% of the time whatever be the solar activity, the inferred polarities are quite reliable (the success rate of the method being 95%).
