The TIMED Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) obtains simultaneous far ultraviolet multispectral images of the aurora. The TIMED orbit allows us to image the aurora over a wide range of magnetic local times and geophysical conditions. In this paper we consider the comparison of one the most commonly used auroral measurements, the in situ ion and electron energy and flux observations made by the DMSP SSJ/4 sensor, to the radiances observed by GUVI. In this report we examine the ability of GUVI to determine the parameters that lead to the formation of the auroral E-region ionosphere. We also find that GUVI is able to readily identify regions of proton precipitation. We will discuss the determination of a UV boundary for the aurora from GUVI and how that compares to the boundary observed by other means, such as IMAGE FUV measurements.
