We propose to observe the nuclear regions of four starburst galaxies and two ULIRGs using the HET/MRS telescope and instrument. The starburst galaxies were selected from a sample Na I absorbers in which the Na I is primarily due to either interstellar absorption or circumstellar absorption. We have selected two starbursts with primarily interstellar Na I absorption and two with primarily circumstellar Na I absorption in order to extend to extragalactic sources the current hypothesis that DIB strengths are correlated with interstellar Na I in external galaxies. In addition, we propose to observe two ULIRGs with varying PAH emission. One ULIRG has strong emission while the other has weak emission. The goal is to determine how DIB strengths vary with PAH emission strengths in these galaxies to further understand the connection between those carriers that create the DIBs and the well-studied PAHs known to cause infra-red emission.
