A complete and unbiased sample of AGN types is required in order to understand the phenomenon of accretion on to supermassive blackholes, (an evolutionary phase that is believed to take place in all massive galaxies), their formation and evolution, and the shape of the Cosmic X- ray background. X-ray surveys provide the best means by which to select AGN, regardless of their obscuration and redshift. But X-ray data do not provide diagnostic properties, e.g. emission line profiles, strengths and redshifts. Many of these sources are heavily obscured and/or high- redshift AGN and so they are weak or invisible at optical wavelengths. We therefore plan to investigate obscured, X-ray-selected AGN in the ChaMP survey at near-IR wavelengths where they are less obscured. We propose to use ISPI on the Blanco 4m telescope to image 4 ChaMP fields that contain optically faint X-ray sources. These data will identify optically faint, red, starlike objects (with r'-K_s >=4 and/or J-K_s >=1.7). Similar surveys to brighter limiting magnitudes and our own preliminary results suggest that ~ 50 % of these sources will be red AGN. Follow-up IR spectroscopy will be requested later to confirm their classification, study their properties and estimate their contribution to the AGN population.
