This proposal aims to obtain optical spectra for the brightest (K~14.5) Extremely Red Objects (R-K> 5) on the sky with optical/near-IR properties suggesting dust enshrouded activity. These are identified over an unprecedented 5300 deg^2 area by cross- correlating the largest optical and near-IR CCD surveys currently available, the SDSS and the 2MASS. The apparent brightness of these systems translates to a ×100 increase in flux at any wavelength compared to typical EROs identified in deep pencil-beam surveys. The proposed observations will constrain the spectroscopic properties of these systems (e.g. redshifts, broad/narrow emission lines) to confirm that they represent the bright-end tail of the dusty EROs found in deeper samples. This is the first step toward high quality panchromatic SEDs for these near-IR bright systems to explore the nature of the energising source (AGN and/or star-formation) and to interpret deeper ERO samples with poorer quality data.
