Scientific paper

Near-infrared observations of W51 (G49.5-0.4) have been carried out. About 200 sources were identified as physically associated with G49.5-0.4 star forming region. The author estimated the mass and age for each source, and derived Initial Mass Function of massive stars in G49.5-0.4, which exhibits a top-heavy shape. He defined four subgroups, and about 20 O stars were born in the youngest group during the last 1 Myr. The massive star forming activity of this group is more violent than in any other visible Galactic H II regions.
