LITTLE is known about the relations between the mercury and oxygen atoms in the crystal lattices of mercury compounds containing oxygen. We decided, therefore, to determine the structure of the most important representatives of this class of compounds by the use of the X-ray diffraction methods. We started our investigations with the study of the so-called mercury oxyhalides, among which the mercuric as well as the mercurous derivatives are known1.
