We present results from observations of eight nearby galaxies with the Spatial Infrared Imaging Telescope (SPIRIT III) on the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite. The galaxies observed were M 31, NGC 253, M 33, NGC 4631, NGC 4945, NGC 5055, M 83, and M 101. Each was imaged in the four primary MSX bands, 8.3 (band A), 12.1 (C), 14.7 (D), and 21.3 (E) μ m, at 18'' resolution. Some of the galaxies show interesting structure in band A not previously detected in the lower-resolution data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). We compare these data with more recent observations with the Infrared Space Observatory, which observed portions of several of our MSX galaxies. Several infrared point sources without counterparts in the Simbad database, probably field stars, were also found at 8.3 μ m near a few of the galaxies (1 near M 101, 5+ near M 83, 5+ near NGC 4945, 6+ near M 31), not to mention infrared detections of a multitude of previously known objects.
