This article examines the state of a magnetized fluid or plasma arbitrarily close to the event horizon of a Kerr black hole. It is found that the bulk four-velocity attains a unique asymptotic form as viewed by all external observers and there are no stable equilibria arbitrarily close to the horizon. Of particular astrophysical interest, it is shown that if one attempts to suspend a plasma just outside the horizon with magnetic ropes then the large-scale magnetic-field lines will be reconnected and the plasma will accrete toward the hole.
