The evolution of a binary system with a millisecond pulsar in the period gap (P is approximately equal to 1.8 ms, B = 5 x 10 exp 8 Gauss) is investigated as a function of the fraction f of the impinging flux. It is shown that in the period gap the evolution is determined by four characteristic time scales, and that small changes in f can significantly affect the system's evolution. It is shown that, for f of 0.015-0.017, filling of the Roche lobe occurs when the binary period is about 50 m. The application of the results for the system MXB 1916 - 05 is discussed.
