The evolution of the forbidden multiplet (1F) oxygen lines in the
optical spectrum of SN 1988 A is used to determine the evolution of the
optical depth in those transitions which in turn can be used to derive
the number density of oxygen in the ejecta. It is shown that the oxygen
in supernova 1988 A is clumped with a filling factor of order 5 percent.
