With less than a dozen young (t < 2000 yr old) Galactic SNRs currently known, surveys of nearby galaxies offer the potential of developing a meaningful, progenitor-related classification scheme for young SNRs, especially those associated with core-collapse supernovae. Unfortunately, outside of a few young LMC/SMC remnants and late-time emissions associated with some recently observed SNe (e.g., SN 1979C and SN 1987A), there are presently only two young, extragalactic SNRs identified (i.e., SN 1885 in M31 and the NGC 4449 SNR). We will review the results of past optical extragalactic SNR surveys and compare the properties of the detected SNRs to those of young Galactic remnants. Future detection strategies as well as the advantages and limitations of optical searches for young, extragalactic SNRs relative to other wavelength bands will be discussed.
